Day 1: Marrakech → Tizi N'Tichka → Ait Ben Haddou → Dades Valley

The start of your Sahara trip from Marrakech will include a pickup from your accommodation early in the morning at 8:00 am. After leaving the bustling city, you will be climbing into the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi N'Tichka Pass. The road twists and climbs to 2,260 meters, offering stunning views of Berber villages that cling to hillsides and a backdrop of snow-capped peaks in the winter months.

The first major stop is the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site that showcases Moroccan architecture. This ksar was built from earthen clay and has been remarkably preserved over the centuries. As you walk through the narrow alleyways and climb to the granary on top, your guide will be telling you interesting stories about the ksar and its history and how it served as a filming site for films, like Lawrence of Arabia and The Mummy.

After your lunch in one of Ouarzazate's local restaurants or in a traditional restaurant, you will continue through the green Skoura Oasis, known for its palm trees and kasbahs. We will then pass along the aromatic Valley of Roses, well known for its damask roses harvested in the spring for producing cosmetics.

In the early afternoon, you will arrive at the stunning Dades Valley, where the amazing rock formations will take you to another place. Enjoy a comfortable hotel or traditional riad, enjoy a delicious Moroccan dinner, and rest for your next day's adventure!

Day 2: Dades Valley → Todra Gorges → Merzouga Desert

Following breakfast with an impressive view of the Dades Valley's rugged scenery, your Morocco travel itinerary will continue along the famed Road of a Thousand Kasbahs. Along the way, you will see many fortified dwellings and storage plants dotting the landscape along ancient caravan routes.

Your itinerary continues through the wonderful Tinghir Oasis, arriving soon to the stunning Todra Gorges. You will be amazed at two large limestone cliffs rising 320 meters above a tight corridor, possibly one of the most awe-inspiring natural sites in all of Morocco. Take the opportunity to wander through the gorge, feeling small in the massive walls of rock while enjoying the cool shade and the rush of the river.

Following lunch near the gorges, you will continue passing through the town of Erfoud, where there are numerous workshop spaces developing beautiful items that use fossils from marine life, which are found throughout the desert. As you start getting closer to Merzouga, the vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as the landscape becomes more and more dry. Finally, you will be able to see the Erg Chebbi dunes in the distance: beautiful waves of gold sand frozen in time.

In the late afternoon, you will arrive at the edge of the desert and meet your camel caravan for what is unquestionably the most anticipated part of any Sahara desert experience. You will saddle up on your friendly camel and take a 1- to 1.5-hour ride across the rolling dune landscape to arrive at your camp, just in time for an extraordinary desert sunset. The sun sets over the sand, offering brilliant shades of orange, pink, and purple—something that you'll remember for a lifetime.

At your luxury desert camp, you will be welcomed with traditional mint tea before you settle into your upscale tent with all private amenities, including comfortable beds. After the sun sets, you will get to experience a traditional Moroccan dinner under the stars, along with entertainment around the campfire featuring traditional Berber drum music. After dinner, you may have the chance to venture outside to witness the Sahara's famous night sky. As you look up to the sky, you will see the classic Milky Way stretching across the sky in dazzling fashion.

Day 3: Merzouga → Rissani → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate

Wake up pre-dawn to witness one of nature's breathtaking shows, the sunrise over the dunes of the Sahara. You'll see the first rays of light magically change the cool blue and purple desert into a fantastic display of golds and oranges. After breakfast at camp, you will have the option to return to the village of Merzouga either by camel trek or in a comfortable 4x4 transfer with your luggage.

The next leg of your journey will take you to Rissani. As the ancient capital of the Tafilalet region, Rissani has served as a strategic trade route for centuries. On the days that coincide with the market days (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays), you will see a real Moroccan souk where locals are bartering livestock, vegetables, and more traditional goods. Your guide will take you through the busy market, highlighting the local economy and culture.

As you leave Rissani behind, you will travel across the stark beauty of pre-Saharan scenery and the mountainous Jbel Saghro. Entering the Draa Valley, you will see a dramatic change in landscape. The Draa Valley is Morocco's longest river valley and is characterized by large oases filled with date palms, which create vibrant green patterns in the parched landscape. The route is dotted with ancient kasbahs and fortified villages, and many are still inhabited by Berber families who live there traditionally.

The road climbs through the Anti-Atlas Mountains on the TiziN'Tniffift pass before venturing down towards Ouarzazate, which will be reached in the late afternoon. Once in Ouarzazate, an important city in southern Morocco, you will check in to your accommodation—often a beautifully restored kasbah or riad—before having dinner and contemplating your time in the desert.

Day 4: Ouarzazate → Telouet (Optional) → High Atlas → Marrakech

On the final day, you will have the opportunity to venture into Ouarzazate, sometimes referred to as the "Hollywood of Morocco." While in Ouarzazate, you will visit the famous Atlas Film Studios, which has hosted numerous major motion picture productions, from Kingdom of Heaven to Prince of Persia. These studios are particularly interesting, as they allow visitors to view behind the scenes of major movie productions and historical Egyptian temples from prior productions.

Following Ouarzazate, you will tour Taourirt Kasbah, a beautiful and expansive fortified palace that was once the home of the Glaoui family and their servants. The kasbah simply offers quintessential architecture indicative of the southern Moroccan style, with decorated clay walls, complex wooden ceilings, and a maze of rooms and passageways.

If time permits, and if you haven’t done so on Day 1, you may have the opportunity to return to Ait Ben Haddou or drive a short distance away to the optional Telouet Kasbah. Although partially ruined, the grandeur of this palace constructed by the same Glaoui warlords who once controlled the routes for the regional salt trade is still breathtaking. Within the crumbling facades, which seem quite ordinary from the exterior, are stunningly ornate rooms with colorful zellige tilework and painted cedar ceilings that create quite an unexpected surprise and add value to this relatively short detour.

On your return journey, you will follow the stunning High Atlas route again through Tizi N'Tichka Pass. You'll see the mountains washed by afternoon light with different shadows, allowing you to have perspectives into these landscapes you traversed a few days earlier. There will be some time for strategically chosen moments for last photographs or refreshment breaks before descending back into the palm-filled plains of Marrakech.

You will arrive in Marrakech sometime between 4 PM and 7 PM depending on time at stops and traffic, and you will be dropped off at your accommodation or drop-off point of choice.
